My Chosen Path to Motherhood: Why I Used a Donor and Became a Single Mom by Choice
I didn’t grow up dreaming of motherhood. It wasn’t until my late 20s, after helping raise my nieces and nephews, that I felt the pull of something deeper—a love I wanted to experience firsthand. But the family I envisioned never included a man. So I made the decision to become a single mother by choice, using an unknown donor and a lot of intention. This is my story: why I did it, how it’s going, and why I don’t regret a single step.
What Breastfeeding Feels Like—And Why I’m Still Doing It
Breastfeeding isn’t just about nourishment—it’s about connection. For me and my daughter, it’s been a journey of closeness, commitment, and quiet strength. Despite the pressure to stop and the cultural stigma in the Black community, we’re still going strong nearly two years in. This is the story of what breastfeeding really feels like, why I chose it, and why I’m still choosing it—one feed, one bond, one day at a time.
Being the Strong One is Exhausting
Being the strong one sounds noble—until you’re crying in a hotel bathroom, doing your makeup through tears, and showing up “happy” because no one thought to check on you.
This post is my truth—the emotional labor, the leadership masks, the loneliness, and why I built EmpowerYa as a space to finally be held too.
You Are Not Alone - I See You
I’m a single Black mother by choice—raising my daughter while re-parenting myself, carrying the weight of provider, protector, leader, and motivator every single day.
I created The EmpowerYa because I couldn’t find a space that saw me.
So I built one for me, for you, for all of us.
This isn’t about perfection. It’s about truth, healing, and building something real.
Because we deserve support that actually sees who we are.
