You Are Not Alone - I See You
I’m Shatarra. I’m a single Black mother by choice to a one-year-old daughter, and I am learning to parent her while re-parenting myself.
Every day, I’m the sole provider.
The strong one for my family.
The leader at work.
The backbone in my relationship.
The motivator for myself—especially on the days when I don’t feel like showing up.
And I chose this.
Intentionally.
I chose to become a mother. I chose to sign an agreement that legally released the father from responsibility—no contact, no co-parenting, no financial support. Not because I wanted to struggle. But because I wanted to be free to create something beautiful and whole, on my own terms.
And even though I made that decision with clarity, the world has a lot to say about it.
Since becoming a mother, I’ve been constantly searching for resources, stories, and support that reflect me.
Not idealized mom blogs.
Not single mom survival tips written with pity.
Not workplace wellness programs that don’t consider child care, grief, or burnout.
I’m not just overlooked—
I’m often invisible.
And when I am seen, I’m reduced to a stereotype. A warning. A burden.
Being a single Black mother in America is treated like a failure—
in society, in dating, in the workplace.
But I’m not a failure.
I’m a full person.
And I know I’m not the only one.
Why I Created EmpowerYa
I created EmpowerYa because I needed something real—
A space where I didn’t have to shrink, apologize, or pretend I had it all figured out.
EmpowerYa is for women like me; Single Black moms by choice, chance, or circumstance, women who carry it all, and still show up, women who are tired of surviving, and ready to feel supported.
